UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that the rule of law is in grave danger of becoming "lawless governance", pointing to the myriad of illegal actions around the world - from Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the coups in Africa's Sahel region to North Korea's illegal nuclear weapons programme and the unprecedented attacks on the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.
"From the smallest village to the world stage, the rule of law is all that separates peace and stability from the brutal struggle for power and resources," Guterres told the UN Security Council. In all regions of the world, civilians are suffering the most from conflict, massacres, growing poverty and hunger, while countries continue to violate international law "with impunity", including through the unlawful use of force and the development of nuclear weapons, said Guterres.
And it is very sad that humanity does not have the means to stop these deplorable and disgusting activities of the creatures that call themselves human beings. Neither force, nor religion, nor philosophy with its ethics and morals has any chance, because power, material wealth and selfishness are the basis of the values of the majority of humanity.
Following the announcement by Poland of its decision to supply Ukraine with Leopard-2 tanks, reports have emerged that the German Government will not allow Poland and/or Finland to send these tanks unless the United States also agrees to provide Ukraine with M1 Abrams tanks.
Later, German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck tried to rectify the situation by tweeting that Germany should not block Poland's request for tanks to Ukraine. Habeck hinted at support, writing, "Germany should not interfere when other countries take decisions to support Ukraine, regardless of what decision Germany takes."
Or else. These slips, slides and skates by Germany certainly do not do it any honour or ensure its credibility as a potential ally.
Meanwhile, the US has reaffirmed its support for allied initiatives to provide Ukraine with heavy weapons, including tanks, and has called for repair and maintenance capabilities. General Patrick Ryder, a spokesman for the US Department of Defence, said that one of the key factors taken into account in providing assistance is ensuring Ukrainian training capacity and maintenance of such weapons. In this regard, he stressed, "We will continue to consider all options related to the capabilities we provide to Ukraine."
The Pentagon spokesman is confident that this issue will be discussed on 20 January. The Pentagon will discuss this at a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group in Ramstein, Germany, on January 20. He said that the meeting would also cover Ukraine's air defence and ammunition supply.
Mikhail Podoliak, Adviser to the Head of the Presidential Chancellery, also reacted to the rumours and pointed out that Ukraine will in any case receive tanks from Poland and the United Kingdom. "There is no doubt about it. Decisions on the content have already been taken. The decision on the number has not been taken yet. Obviously, the logic of the war means that we will get all the weapons we need", Podoliak said.
Emine Dzhaparova, First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine, called on the Member States of the United Nations to support the resolution on the establishment of a special tribunal to investigate the crime of aggression by the Russian Federation, which will be submitted to the General Assembly shortly.
In her speech at the UN, Dzhaparova stressed that "the law of force that Russia is barbarously using against Ukraine sends a clear message to everyone in this room: no one is safe anymore". "If a country abusing the rights and privileges of a permanent member of the Security Council attacks another UN member state, it means only one thing: security has been destroyed, international peace has been called into question and the rule of law has been grossly violated," Dzhiaparova added.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman noted that 88 years ago, the US, Britain, France and the Soviet Union signed the London Agreement and the Charter of the International Military Tribunal, which paved the way for the Nuremberg Trials.
Yes, indeed. We have no doubt that the Russian regime and the collective Putin will face a tribunal. It would be nice if our diplomats would hurry up and hold the trial in Vilnius.
Derek Chollet, the US State Department's adviser, has expressed grave concern about the activities of the Russian private military company, the Wagner Group, and its attempts to recruit troops in Serbia and other countries around the world. He expressed these concerns during talks in Belgrade with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. "We have seen that the Wagner Group is trying to recruit soldiers in Serbia and elsewhere, and we believe that this cannot be tolerated", he said.
"<...> we <...> look forward to working with the government here in Belgrade and elsewhere where Wagner operates to bring an end to their activities," the diplomat added.
We believe that expressing concern, strange as it may seem, will not help in this case. As with all the others, which have the foul stench of the Kremlin.
Operational level
The Russians desperately need a victory. At any cost, anywhere, let it be the salt mines. The psychological state of the marauders is tragic, and a tiny victory would give the Russian terrorists hope that this war is not completely pointless.
By combining air and ground actions, the Russian fascists may soon launch a hybrid terrorist attack. This is also confirmed by Ukrainian intelligence, which has reported a renewed increase in the activity of enemy unmanned aerial vehicles.
In addition, an official of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Terrorism Affairs said this morning that Belarus could get involved in the conflict in Ukraine if Kyiv decides to "invade" any country. Alexei Polyshchuk, an associate of the war criminal Lavrov, said that Russia's ongoing exercises with Belarus are aimed at preventing escalation, but warned that Belarus could join the conflict in Ukraine if it or Russia is attacked. "From a legal point of view, the use of military force by the Kyiv regime or the invasion of Belarusian or Russian territory by Ukrainian armed forces is sufficient grounds for a collective response," he told the propaganda outlet TASS.
The half-wits in the Kremlin always announce what they are going to do. Such a statement signals that Russia may stage a provocation, strike Belarus and blame Ukraine. We have seen this 'brilliant' manoeuvre by Russia more than once throughout history.
Ukrainian forces in the eastern town of Soledar are holding their ground and inflicting heavy losses on Russian troops, President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address on Thursday. Mr Zelensky thanked the two Ukrainian units in Soledar, which, he said, "are holding their positions and inflicting heavy losses on the enemy". He gave no further details. Mr Zelensky also said that he had met with Ukrainian army commanders on Thursday to analyse in detail what reinforcements are needed in the fight for Soledar and surrounding towns and what action should be taken in the coming days.
In Russia, a close ally of Führer Putin has proposed confiscating the assets and funds of Russians who discredit the country's armed forces and oppose the war in Ukraine. Russian Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin said that current measures, such as fines for those who oppose what Moscow calls a "special military operation" in Ukraine, are not tough enough.
The Pentagon is considering supplying Ukraine with GLSDB (ground-launched small diameter bombs) charges for HIMARS systems, which would allow Ukrainian defenders to reach invader targets at a range of around 150 km. The supply of these small-diameter bombs could be a compromise solution to the ATACMS missiles requested by Ukraine, which travel up to 300 km.
Finland has sent €160 million in military aid to Ukraine. This was announced by the Ukrainian Centre for Strategic Communication and Information Security, established under the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy. The content of the aid package was not disclosed. "The Winter War Masters strongly request not to disclose the content of what they have transferred. Let it remain a surprise for the Russian occupiers. We thank our great friend and partner for his support," the Centre said in a statement.
We very much hope that the next package will be carried by the Leoprard-2 tanks that Finland intends to hand over to Kyiv.
Tactical level
The Kremlin reported yesterday that it had destroyed 4 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles supplied by the US to Ukraine on the eastern front near Bakhmut and Soledar.
Well, that's amazing. The brave Russian fascist marauders in Ukraine are destroying what does not exist. Tomorrow, we are expecting reports of 146 Abrams and 1023 Leopard tanks destroyed. That's right.
According to the latest information we have, the Russian horde has surrounded Soledar on three sides and the only way for the Ukrainian defenders to move relatively freely is from the main hospital of the town towards Blahodatne in the west (mine complexes No 1 and No 7). The railway station and the railway are in Ukrainian hands. The Russians continue to use the proven tactics of Surovikin - the first wave to overwhelm the Ukrainian positions with the flesh of the mobilised, and the second to storm the positions of the exhausted and ammunition-consumed Ukrainians in small groups of well-trained soldiers. The Ukrainian military confirmed that it had shot down one Su-25 on a Wagner support mission yesterday.
In total, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 17 Russian attacks on the Eastern Front. The Russian occupiers carried out 5 rocket attacks on targets in Kostyantynivka, Kramatorsk and Zaporizhzhya, 52 rocket artillery attacks and 18 air strikes.
In the vicinity of Zaporizhzhya and Kherson, the Russians attacked with tanks, mortars, guns and rocket artillery.
The Russian occupiers continue to exert pressure on the local population of the temporarily occupied areas of the Kherson region, who refuse to cooperate with the occupation authorities. In addition, the occupiers are worried about the pro-Ukrainian attitude of the population in the area, which threatens them. In some settlements of the Melitopol district of Zaporizhzhya oblast, the enemy is carrying out filtration operations. During the inspection, the occupiers pay particular attention to telephones, seeking confirmation of cooperation with the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
Over the past day, the Ukrainian Air Force has launched 16 air strikes against enemy concentrations and 5 strikes against Russian anti-aircraft missile systems.
The Ukrainian Rocket and Artillery Forces attacked 3 command posts, 12 Russian troop and equipment concentration points, an enemy S-300 anti-aircraft missile complex, 3 ammunition depots and 3 other important military installations.
A Russian citizen was convicted in Russia for refusing to participate in a "special operation in Ukraine". He received 5 years for this act. Five years in prison is the perfect alternative to a guaranteed transformation into fertiliser on Ukrainian soil. If two hundred thousand of these were to emerge, the regime would run out of prison wardens.
Today is a special day in Lithuania to commemorate the victory over the Soviet Union and the victims. Here in Lithuania, we know what Russian aggression looks like. We know what it is like to be tortured, expelled, killed and crushed by tanks.
We have known this terrorist state since its inception in the 13th century. It can only be stopped with courage, as Lithuania did on 13 January 91.
